Overview

You do not need to be married to build your life in the UK together. The partner route recognises couples who have been living together in a relationship for at least 2 years, on the same footing as married couples: the same financial requirement, the same route to settlement, the same journey to citizenship. What changes is the evidence, because your relationship history does the work a marriage certificate would otherwise do.

The Two-Year Requirement

You must show that you have been living together in a relationship for at least 2 years when you apply. The rules also recognise couples in a committed 2-year relationship who cannot live together because of work, study or cultural reasons, provided the ongoing commitment is evidenced through communication, financial support, shared care of children and time spent together.

The 2 years does not need to be one unbroken tenancy in joint names. Real lives include moves, postings abroad and periods apart. What the evidence must show is a relationship akin to marriage subsisting through that period. Gaps are explained, not hidden.

The Evidence That Carries The Case

The strongest bundles show the couple's shared life across the period from more than one official source: tenancies, utility and Council Tax bills, joint or same-address bank statements, GP and dentist letters, official correspondence to the same address. Where documents are thin for a period, alternatives such as one-off bills, electoral register letters and student finance paperwork can fill gaps. Documents should generally be under 4 years old. Everything Else Mirrors The Spouse Route

Sponsor status, the £29,000.00 financial requirement and its transitional and benefits-based variants, English language, accommodation and suitability apply exactly as they do to spouses. See Spouse Visa Requirements and the Financial Requirement guide. Fees, health surcharge, grant lengths and settlement timing are also identical: 2 years 9 months from abroad or 2 years 6 months in-country, extensions of 2 years 6 months, and settlement after 5 years on the route.

If You Get Engaged

A specific Home Office direction applies: if you are in the UK as an unmarried partner and you become engaged, do not apply to extend as a fiance or proposed civil partner. You apply to extend with the status you already hold. Marrying does not restart your route; time as an unmarried partner and as a spouse with the same partner builds the same five-year picture.

When The Unmarried Partner Route Is The Wrong Choice

If you have not yet reached 2 years of cohabitation and cannot evidence a qualifying relationship, marriage or a fiance application may reach the same destination sooner. This is a strategy question with fee, timing and evidential consequences either way; five minutes of advice before committing is worth more than any amount of paperwork after.

FAQs

Do we need exactly 2 years of joint tenancy agreements?

No. You need evidence of living together in a relationship for 2 years. Tenancies are strong evidence, but a spread of official documents to the same address does the same work.

We lived together abroad. Does that count?

Cohabitation abroad can count towards the 2 years. The evidence rules are the same; foreign documents need certified translations.

Can same-sex couples use this route?

Yes. The partner route applies equally to same-sex couples, whether married, in a civil partnership or cohabiting.

What if we have lived together for less than 2 years?

The unmarried partner definition will not be met. Options include marrying, a fiance application, or waiting. We advise on which fits your circumstances and timescale.
